Gasoline / Diesel Dynamometers
Dynamometers that are used for testing gasoline and diesel engines can be identical. Depending on the type of testing to be done, generally dictates the size and type of dynamometer. Diesel engines do however display a much different set of characteristics from gasoline engines. These include: Low idle speeds, high torque values at low speeds and generally operate in a lower speed range. In larger horsepower ranges of testing, hydraulic units are very popular. This is due to their characteristics of low speed torque and high power density.
